Blood Flashcards
What is the function of white blood cells:
Defence against pathogens
Where is urea made and where does it go:
Liver and kidneys (in that order)
During blood clotting:
Fibrinogen changes to fibrin
What 4 things does blood transport around the body:
Glucose, oxygen, water, hormones
Rate of blood flow =
Time
What is the unit for the rate of blood flow:
Volume unit/time unit
What are the 4 main things in the blood:
Platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells, plasma
What causes blood clotting:
Platelets
What does plasma do:
Carries everything
What do red blood cells do:
Transports oxygen
How are red blood cells adapted to their function:
They have a large surface area and no nucleus
What does plasma carry:
Products of digestion, carbon dioxide, hormones and urea
Why is blood red:
Because it contains haemoglobin
How is urea made:
From the breakdown of red blood cells. It is toxic
How does oxygen get into the blood:
The blood flows through the alveoli and reacts to form oxyhaemoglobin. When the blood flows through the respiring tissues the compound splits up and the oxygen is used by the cells in respiration
