Plants Flashcards
Define osmosis:
Diffusion of water through a partial permeable membrane
Define diffusion:
Movement of a substance from high to low concentration until equal concentrations
Define active transport:
Diffusion against the concentration gradient - low to high - requires energy
What are plant cells normally:
Turgid
What do plant cells become with nearly enough water:
Flaccid
What do plant cells become without enough water:
Plasmolyzed
Where does diffusion occur:
Alveoli (oxygen and carbon dioxide)
Villi (small soluble food particles)
Where does osmosis occur:
Root hair cells
Large intestine
Where does active transport occur:
Root hair cells (minerals)
All products of digestion
Factors that affect diffusion:
Temperature, concentration, surface area
Factors that affect osmosis:
Temperature, concentration, surface area
Factors that affect active transport:
Temperature, surface area
What are vascular bundles:
Bundles of small tubes - xylem and phloem tubes
What are xylem tubes:
Dead cells (the ends have broken down) that have thick, rigid walls
What are phloem tubes:
Live cells that sieve the solution that passes through them, with companion cells to assist active transport
