The Heart Flashcards
Name the 3 blood vessels
Arteries, Veins and Capillaries
What do arteries carry
Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, except the pulmonary artery, under high pressure with thick walls and a narrow lumen.
What do veins carry
Veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart and have thin elastic walls, a wide lumen, and valves to make sure the low pressure blood doesn’t move backwards
How does blood get around the body
Through blood vessels
What are capillaries
Capillaries carry blood to the organs and body systems under low pressure and the walls are one cell thick
What is the vena cava
Very large veins that bring deoxygenated blood to the heart to get oxygen
What’s the happens in the four chambers in the heart
The right atrium is one of the four chambers and receives blood low in oxygen from the vena cava and contracts into the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps the deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. The left atrium receives the oxygen rich blood and pumps contracts it to the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps the blood to the body through the aorta
How can you prevent heart diseases
By exercising and having a healthy diet, you have low blood cholesterol, a fatty substance found in your blood. If you have too much blood cholesterol, your arteries can get blocked or lack of blood flow
How are red blood cells specialised
They have a thin membrane so oxygen can diffuse easily
