The Heart Flashcards
What is plasma
Is it a yellow liquid that carries red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
What do red blood cells do
They pick up oxygen from the air in your lungs and carry it to cells where it’s needed
Two red blood cell adaptations
- Packed with a red pigment called haemoglobin that binds to oxygen
- They have no nucleus, making more space for haemoglobin
White blood cell function
The body’s defence system against harmful microorganisms.
Platelets function
To help the blood clot at the site of a wound to prevent bleeding to death
The three different blood vessels
Arteries, veins and capillaries
Arteries function
Carry blood away from your heart to the organs of your body. It has a pulse
Veins function
Carry blood away from the organs towards your heart, the blood is usually low in oxygen so it has no pulse
Capillaries function
It enables substances like oxygen to diffuse out of your blood and into your cells
What are the walls of capillary atrety and veins like
Arteries- very thick
Vein- thinner walls than artery
Capillary- very narrow with very thin walls
What is the double circulatory system
One transport system carries blood from your heart to your lungs and back again. This allows substances like oxygen to be exchanged.
Another carries blood from your heart to all other organs and back again
