Health Flashcards
Coronary heart disease
When coronary arteries get blocked by layers of fatty material building up, blood flow becomes restricted and it can lead to a heart attack
Stents
Stents are tubes insterted into the arteries to keep them open and make sure blood passes through to the heart muscles
Risks of stents
Complications during the operation (like a heart attack)
Risk of infection from surgery
Risk of patients developing a blood clot near the stent (thrombosis)
Cholesterol
An essential lipid that your body produces and needs but too much of certain types of cholesterol like LDL cholesterol can cause health problems. Having too much can cause coronary heart disease
Statins
Statins are drugs which can reduce the amount of ‘bad’ cholesterol present in the blood stream. It slows down the rate of fatty deposits forming
3 artificial things for cardiovascular disease
An artifical heart that can pump blood
Faulty valves replaced with biological or mechanical valves
Artificial blood for an emergency
5 risk factors that can cause disease directly
Smoking for things like lung cancer
Obesity for things like type 2 diabetes
Too much alcohol for liver disease
Smoking or drinking while pregnant cause health problems for the baby
Cancer from exposure to certain substances or radiation
What is cancer caused by
Uncontrolled cell growth and division
Benign tumour and Malignant tumour
Benign- tumour grows until theres no more room and stays in one place, isn’t normally dangerous and isn’t cancerous
Malignant- tumour grows and spread to neighbouring healthy tissues to form secondary tumours, they are dangerous and are cancerous
Risk factors of cancer
Smoking- lung cancer
Obesity- kidney cancer
UV exposure- skin cancer
Viral infection- some viruses increase chances of developing a cancer
Genes- can make you more susceptible to cancer
