28 July: Austria-Hungry blames Serbia for his death. They attack them.
29 July: After promising to protect Serbia, Russia attacks Austria-Hungry.
1 August: Germany declares war on Russia because they support Austria-Hungary.
2 August: Britain prepares its warships.
3 August: Germany plans on defeating France before attacking Russia. They declare war on France.
4 August: Germany asks Belgium if their soldiers can walk through their country to attack France. They say no. Germany does it. Britain, who has a deal to protect Belgium, attacks Germany.
6 August: Austria-Hungry declares war on Russia.
12 August: Britain and France declare war on Austria-Hungary.

A

If Russia and France were to fight Germany at the same time. The Schlieffen plan would mean they start by giving France a big attack through Belgium before moving to the collossul yet slow Russian army.

Why did the Schlieffen plan go wrong?

A

The Belgians put up a fierce fight.
The BEF held them back at Mons.
The Russians launched an attack on Germany on August 19th, which was a lot quicker than they had expected.
Before they had the chance to capture Paris, they had to send toops to face Russia.

A

They dug trenches and set up machine guns. The British and French couldn’t break through their defences. They dug trenches directly opposite. By the end of 1914, neither could find a way through - they were stuck in a stalemate.

Food - the ever-increasing armies had to ration. The food became stale and basic.

The League of Nations was set up.
