February 1923
Hyperinflation. Due to an economic crisis, the government kept on printing money until it was worthless.
March 1923
Germany couldn’t pay France reparations.
So the French invaded parts of Germany and took goods instead, which the small German army couldn’t stop.
November 1923
Germans were angry that the governments weren’t trying to stop hyperniflation or the French so Hitler staged a ‘putsch’ in Munich. He, the Nazis and the SA tried to overthrow the government but were shot and imprisoned instead.
1924-1925
Hitler got los of publicity after he was sent to prison for trying to overthrow the German army, especially when ne wrote about his thoughts in his book, ‘Mein Kampf’.
1927
To attract people to their cause, the Nazis hold their first huge rally, the Nuremburg Rally.
1929
The Great Depression hits and USA asks for their money back from Hermany. They then can’t afford to pay France. France invade them again and unemployment reaches 4 million.
January 1933
The Nazi party become the largest in Germany and President Hindenburg is forced to make Hitker Chancellor of Germany.
February 1933
The Reichstag (German Parliament Building) is burnt down. The Nazis blame the Communists.
March 1933
Hitler creates the ‘Enabling Law’ which allows him to make up laws in ‘an emergency’.
He bans other politcial parties.
April 1933
Hitler creates the Gestapo, his secret police to do what he wants and capture political enemies, for whom he sets up his first concrentration camp.
Why did Germany have to give loans back to the USA after the Great Depression?
They were given loans under the 1924 Dawes Plan.
