What did Gladstone believe in?
Strongly believed in the right of the individual. He also had a strong moral compass as a result of his strong religious beliefs. Religion conviction would dominate his politics.
What was Gladstones ‘catchphrase’?
‘Peace, retrenchment and reform’.
what was Gladstone opinion on industry?
Believed industrial developments showed be encouraged by the government. Peace with other nations should be maintained in order to increase industrial growth.
What was Gladstone’s opinion on tax?
He wanted to abolish income tax. Believed it deprived people of the opportunity to spend their money.
What form of conservatism did Disraeli believe in?
‘Tory Democracy’, i.e the support of established institutions, preservation of the monarchy, the British Empire, the Church.
Why was Disraeli a controversial figure in 19th-century politics?
He was the son of a merchant and not the establishment. He was also born a Jew, which wasn’t popular at the time.
