The global implications of carbon management. Flashcards
What unsustainable farming practices do we use?
Overcultivation and overgrowing, flooding of rice fields and unmanaged decomposition of manure.
What are the negative impacts of our current farming practices?
Soil erosion leading to large quantities of CO2 in the atmosphere.
How much methane/year does livestock farming produce?
100 million tonnes
What is zero tillage?
Growing crops without ploughing them, conserves organic content and reduces likelihood of erosion.
What is a polyculture?
Growing annual crops interspersed with trees, prevents soil erosion.
What do crop residues do?
Leaving them on fields prevents the erosion and drying out of soils.
Why will we use less heavy machinery?
It compacts the soil and thus to prevent runoff.
How will we reduce emissions from animal farming?
Improve their food so less methane is released, controlled manure decomposition.
