What is going on in the cartoon and how does it describe why the French Revolution started?
Revolution French/ American
The American Revolution influenced the French Revolution. The French Revolution was the common folk standing up for equal rights for themselves.
Enlightenment
Some of the ideas in the Enlightenment, such as people could think and reason for themselves, sparked the French Revolution.
Poverty/hunger
Many people in the 3rd estate had to pay taxes by giving food away and giving the wealthy more money, causing them to hunger and go into poverty.
Taxes
The 1st and 2nd estates did not pay taxes, the 3rd estate had to pay taxes to the other 2 estates.
1st Estate
The Clergy: The French clergy enjoyed enormous wealth and privilege.They became rich by collecting tithes and did not pay taxes.
2nd Estate
The Nobility: Descendants of noble knight during the Middle Ages. They were given top jobs in government, the army, and the royal court. They did not pay taxes but spent much of their income maintaining their status during the period of rising prices.
3rd Estate
The Bourgeoisie: bankers, merchants, lawyers, doctors, and professors
Poor: Farmers and urban workers who worked in the factories.
Estates General
The Estates-General was a meeting of the three classes to talk about the problems.
Execution of King Louis
The King and Queen tried to escape from France but failed. King Louis was beheaded, and the Queen was after him.
Reign of Terror
The Revolutionary government took drastic measures against those who were suspected of being enemies of the Revolution, lots of people were beheaded.
Maximilien Robespierre
He started the reign of terror and was eventually beheaded.
