The five kingdoms Flashcards
What are the five kingdoms?
prokaryotae (bacteria)
protocista (the unicellular eukaryotes)
fungi
plantae
animalia
What are the general features of prokarotae?
unicellular
no nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles
a ring of ‘naked’ DNA - small ribosomes
no feeding mechanism, nutrients are abosrbed through cell wall or internally by photosyntheis
e.g. E.coli
What are the general features of protocista?
(mainly) unicellular
a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles
some have chloroplasts
e.g. amoeba
some are sessile, but others move by cilia, flagella or ameoboid mechanism
nutrients are acquired as by ingestions of organisms or photosynthesis
What are the general features of fungi?
uni or multicellular
cell wall made from chitin
no chlroplasts
no locomotion
most have mycelium made of threads of hyphae
nutrients are absorbed - mainly from decaying material (saprophytic)
glycogen food stores
What are the general features of plantae?
all contain chlorophyll
gametes can move using cilia or flagella
autotrophic feeders, photosynthesis
store food as starch
