Q

Why is enrichment needed in the zoo environment?

A

Environments are static in captivity so animals need the additional stimulation, which also needs to be varied.

It can be used to promote good behaviors whilst deterring bad ones.

Q

Are there any problems zoos might face when trying to implement the 5 freedoms?

A

The needs of the animals and visitors often need to be balanced.

Some may conflict, prey species cant express behaviours of being predated but are free from fear. Predatory species may not be able to hunt.

It is hard to assess behaviour and welfare in animals so it is not always clear what the exact requirements are.
