Biosecurity Flashcards
1
Q
When are captive population founders considered free of disease?
A
After rigorous testing
2
Q
What are the main factors to consider with regards to bio-security?
A
Is quarantine necessary? Are facilities appropriate? Routine testing. Transmission of disease agents. Vector control. Cleaning/general hygiene. Disposal of waste. Implementation of a preventative medicine program.
3
Q
What are the considerations for direct disease transmission?
A
Species mixing
Contact with free-living animals
4
Q
How else could disease be transmitted?
A
Fomites, vectors etc.
5
Q
How could these be controlled for?
A
Limit movement of people in and out of facilities.
Movement of people in one direction through facilities (most vulnerable/expensive animals first)
Disinfect food and water (as wild animal contaminants)
Control of vectors
