Partula Flashcards
What about invetebrates makes them good targets for captive breeding?
They have a short development time so CB is relatively quick
What are the important aspects to consider when re-introducing species back into the wild?
Health screening (disease and genetics)
managing the wild environment
Connecting fragmented populations
Where are Patulids found?
South Pacific islands of French Polynesia
What is the reason for their decline?
Introduction of the carnivorous land snail (Euglandia rosea) to control the African Land Snail (Lissachatina fulica) without proper testing.
What are the main problems with breeding Partulids in captivity?
They need an artificial diet and are prone to microsporidia infection.
What factors lead to the great genetic diversity seen in Partulids?
Many regions of good quality habitat that are seperated by vast distances so there is lots of opportunity for independent adaptation.
How do humans impact a natural environment?
Bring in non-native plants and livestock at lower elevations. There are also many accidental introductions of predatory species.
n.b. Partula was confined to montane regions.
