- author of ‘The Feminine Mystique’
- her book sparked the feminist movement
When was the Equal Pay Act passed? What was it?
- 1963
- made it law that women and men should receive the equal pay for the same job
What was the 1964 Civil Rights Act?
- banned discrimination in employment because of race or sex
Despite the 1963 and 1964 acts, how did many women feel?
- there was still widespread discrimination against women
- unequal pay still common (even today)
What was the National Organisation of Women? When was it set up?
- set up in 1966
- had 40,000 members
- took companies that failed to give equal pay to court
How did some women feel about NOW?
- they thought it was not inclusive or effect enough as most members were middle class and middle aged women
What was the Women’s Liberation Movement?
- made up of young women
- used more extreme methods to gain rights and equality
What did the Women’s LIB do to the Miss America beauty pageant and why?
- disrupted it
- felt that they shouldn’t comply with makeup etc, because it symbolised male control

- burning bras
- protests
