Q

What did Wolsey initially employ to attempt to pass the divorce?

A

Wolsey employed Leviticus 20:21 to depict Henry’s lack of a legitimate male heir as God’s punishment. He pointed that the validity of Henry’s marriage to Catherine depended upon her declaration that her marriage to Arthur was never consummated. He claimed the dispensation issued by Julius II to permit Henry’s marriage to Catherine was invalid.

Q

Why couldn’t the Pope issue an annulment?

A

Charles V, the nephew of Catherine of Aragon, dominated Pope Clement following the Sack of Rome in May 1527. Wolsey tried to recommence the Habsburg Valois War by initiating an Anglo-French alliance, but this was ineffective as Charles was so entrenched in Italy.
