The Eye Flashcards
Eyelid
A fold of skin which covers the eye. Cleans and protects the eye
Cornea
Is a transparent covering on the eye, that helps to converge light rays that enter the eye
Sclera
White part of the eye which is made of tough collagen fibres, provides protection and support
Retina
A layer of light sensitive cells called photoreceptors at the back of the eye, they detect light rays that are focused by the cornea and lens
Choroid
Layer of blood vessels with a black pigment, this nourishes the eye and absorbs light
Iris
Ring of muscles around the pupil that are coloured; controlling the amount of light entering the eye
Pupil
Hole in the middle of the iris, allowing light to enter the eye
Lens
Transparent, flexible, can change shake due to ciliary muscles
Fovea
located at the back of the eye, high density of cone cells, gives sharp central vision
Optic disc
Blind spot where there are no photoreceptors, optic nerves leave the eye
Optic nerve
Bundle of fibres replaying info from the retina and fives to the brain
