Skin structure
it provides a complete covering to the body, protecting it from the external environment
Epidermis
-waterproof outer layer
- keeps pathogens out
- elastic, gives skin colour
Dermis
- middle layer
- regulates body temperature
- contains hair follicles, nerves, blood vessels and glands
Subcutaneous layer
- made of connective tissue
- high amount of fat to provide insulation and shape
Hair structure
Hairs are made up of keratin and produced by follicles
Downy hair
- soft, fine and dense hairs
- undercoat
Dermis hair
- thick, longer and stiff
- protective outer coat
- guard hair surrounded by 6-12 downy hairs
Horns
They are hollow and are made out of a cone of keratin that surrounds a mass
Antlers
Made of bone with a velvety coating
Claws and hooves
Made of a section of the dermis which is covered in a layer of keratinised epithelium
Locomotion
Is the movement or the ability to move from one place to another

Used for fine nibbling and cutting and delicate grooming

Used for holding prey and tearing meat
