6 Flashcards
What is a reflex?
A fixed response to a stimulus
Receptors within sense organs: 5
Tongue
Eye
Skin
Nose
Ear
Sensory neurons
Take messages to the central nervous system
Relay/interneurons
Connect sensory and motor neurons together
Motor neuron
Take messages away from the CNS to the effectors
what is a neuron?
they are specialised cells that conduct electrical impulses
Dendrite
Receives communication from other nerve cells
Cell body/soma
Surrounds the nucleus
Nucleus
Contains the genetic information that controls the neuron
Myelin Sheath
Outer coating of the axon, protects + maintains health of the axon. Acts like an electrical insulator
Node of Ranvier
Allow impulses to jump by a process called saltatory conduction, impulses jump through the gaps
Schwann Cell
Helps to form the myelin sheath and speeds up transmissions of nerve impulses
Axon terminals
Connects the neuron to target cells
Nares
The avian equivalent of nostrils
Larynx
Not used for vocalisation but the syrinx is used instead
