The Eye Flashcards
Accessory Structures
Eyebrows, eyelids, conjunctiva, lacrimal apparatus, and eye muscles
Palpebrae
Eyelids
Conjunctiva
Transparent membrane that lines eyelids, covers the whites of the eye, and lubricates/protects eye
Lacrimal Apparatus
Consists of lacrimal gland and associated ducts.
Lacrimal Gland
Secrete tears that contain mucus, antibodies, lysozymes, and are important for protection.
Extrinsic Eye Muscles
Six straplike extrinsic eye muscles, enable eye to follow moving objects, maintain shape.
Lateral Rectus
1 of 6 extrinsic eye muscles. Moves eye laterally. VI abducens.
Medial Rectus
1 of 6 extrinsic eye muscles. Moves eye medially. III Oculomotor.
Superior Rectus
1 of 6 extrinsic eye muscles. Elevates eye and turns it medially. III Oculomotor.
Inferior Rectus
1 of 6 extrinsic eye muscles. Depresses eye and turns medially. III Oculomotor.
Inferior Oblique
1 of 6 extrinsic eye muscles. Elevates eye and turns laterally. III Oculomotor.
Superior Oblique
1 of 6 extrinsic eye muscles. Depresses eye and turns laterally. IV Trochlear
Fibrous Tunic
Forms outmost coat of the eye. Has sclera and cornea.
Sclera
Part of fibrous tunic. Protects the eye and anchors extrinsic muscles.
Cornea
Part of fibrous tunic. Lets light enter the eye
Vascular Tunic
Has 3 regions. Choroid, ciliary body, and iris.
Choroid
Part of vascular tunic. Dark brown membrane, supplies blood to eye tunics.
Ciliary Body
Part of vascular tunic. Thickened ring of tissue around the lens that anchors the suspensory ligament that holds lens in place.
Iris
Part of vascular tunic. Colored part of eye, has the pupil/opening of iris. Regulates light entering the eye.
Lens
A transparent flexible structure that allows precise focusing on light onto retina.
Lens epithelium
Anterior cells that differentiate into lens fibers
Lens fibers
Cells filled with the transparent protein, crystallin
Sensory Tunic
Retina. Delicate two-layered membrane.
Pigmented layer
Outer layer of retina that absorbs light and prevents scattering
