The Brain Flashcards
4 regions of brain
Cerebral hemispheres, diencephalon, brain stem, and cerebellum
Ventricles of the Brain
Filled with CSF, lined by ependymal cells, connect to one another and to spinal cord central canal
Gyri
Ridges
Sulci
Shallow grooves
Fissures
Deep grooves
Longitudinal fissure
Separates two hemispheres
Transverse cerebral fissure
Separates cerebrum and cerebellum
5 lobes
Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, and insula
Central Sulcus
Seperates precentral gyrus of frontal and postcentral gyrus of parietal
Central Sulcus
Seperates precentral gyrus of frontal and postcentral gyrus of parietal
Lateral Sulcus
Outlines temporal lobe
Cerebral Cortex
Part of cerebral hemisphere, site of conscious mind, communication, memory. Concerned with contralateral side. Has primary motor cortex, premotor cortex, brocas area, frontal eye field.
Primary Motor Cortex
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Allows conscious control of precise, skilled, skeletal muscles.
Premotor Cortex
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Helps plan movements and control learned, repetitious, patterned skills.
Brocas Area
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Directs muscles during speech and plans speech.
Frontal Eye Field
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Controls voluntary eye movements
Primary Somatosensory Cortex
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Receives general sensory information and spacial discrimination.
Primary Visual Cortex
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Receives visual information from retinas.
Visual Association Area
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Uses past experiences to interpret stimuli
Primary Auditory Cortex
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Interprets information from inner ear.
Auditory Association Area
Part of cerebral hemisphere. Stores memories of sound.
Association Fiber
Connect different parts of same hemisphere
Commissural Fiber
Connect gray matter of two hemispheres
Projection Fiber
Connect hemispheres with lower brain or spinal cord
