The experimental method - aims, hypotheses and variables Flashcards
What is the experimental method?
Involved the manipulation of an IV to measure the effect on the DV
What is an aim?
A general statement about the investigation
What is a hypothesis?
A clear, precise, testable statement that states the relationship between the variables being investigated
What are the two types of hypotheses?
Experimental or alternative/research
Whats the difference between a directional hypothesis and a non-directional hypotheses?
A directional hypothesis makes clear the sort of difference that is expected between two conditions or two groups of people and a non-directional hypothesis simply states that there will be a difference but the nature of the difference is not specified
What is a null hypothesis?
It predicts that there will be no difference
What is an Independant variable?
The variable that is made to change (manipulated) by the research or changes naturally
What is a dependant variable?
The variable that is being measures, the variable that changes as a result of manipulating the IV
What’s operationalisation?
Clearly defining what you mean, a detailed defitnition of what the variable is and what you are changing or measuring precisely
