A

A

the staff of field ambulances set up dressing stations in tents or derelict buildings.
these dressings stations were a quarter of a mile behind the front line.
serious cases were sent to casualty clearing stations.

what would happen at a casualty clearing station (CCS)?

A

the CCS was the first large, well-equipped medical facility the wounded would see.
they were seven to twelve miles from the fighting.
they contained operating theatres, x-ray machines, wards with beds, toilet blocks and more.
the CCS would deal with thousands of casualties at a time.
