why was the reichstag fire important?

a communist was found at the scene of the fire and arrested. hitler and goebbels claimed that der lubbe had started the fire and that the communists were staging a takeover. the day after, ‘decree for the protection of people and state’ made sure that nazis could imprison large numbers of their political opponents.
