The essential commodities(Ammendement) act,2020 Flashcards
What are essential commodities?
-Commodities without which life of normal people gets affected ex.food, medicine, fuel, petroleum products
what is the act?
Using act, central government can add new things to the list of essential commodities &also remove when need arises.
What is the related ammendement?
- government can now remove certain commodities as essential
- currently the items removed from the list are cereals, pulses, potato, onion, edible oilseeds & oils ->hence now their prices will increase -> leading to increase in income of farmer
- Government will only regulate supply & prices in cases of war, famine, high price rise or natural calamities
-High price rise meaning:Cereals, pulses, edible oilseeds & oils are non-perishable items i.e.they can be stored at room temperature for months -> governments says that it will only intervene if their is 50% increase in it’s retail price
Ex:If dal is 100 rs. kg ->if price increased to 151 rs.kg(more than 50% increase) government will again bring it in essential commodities
- For perishable items like potato,Onion the limit of price rise is set to be 100%
- as they are removed from essential list, their is also a chance of hoarding ->leading to black marketing
- Positive point is:possibility of increase in farmers income.
Impact on prices?
Big retailers like reliance fresh, spencer ->will buy from farm directly & sell with the allowed increase of 50% for non-perishable & 100% for perishable food items ->hence common people will definitely see a price hike.
Why the protest?
Opposition saying that agriculture is a state subject & central government is affecting it-> but actually central government is only deciding a limit for price increase it’s not too much
Can central government make above 3 laws?
yes,
agriculture jari state subject asala tari concurrent list madhe food related management ahe -> by that authority central governmanet can make law
