The Environment Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
A community living organisms.
What is biodiversity? How can it be maintained?
Variety of plant and animal life in the world or particular habitat. We can maintain it by becoming educated about the signifance of biodiversity conservation and creating awareness in communities.
What it meant by the term ‘feral’ ?
That the animal is not native. Untamed, escaped from captivity or domestication.
Describe the carbon-oxygen cycle.
The process in which oxygen is released into the atmosphere by animals. In turn, carbon dioxide is taken in by plants and used during photosynthesis. This cycle continues to ensure the correct amount of gas is always in the air.
What is biological control? Give an example.
The control of a pest by the introduction of a natural enemy or predator.
E.g. The biological control of weeds includes insects and pathogens.
What are pesticides?
Used to kill, repel, or control certain forms of plant or animal life that are considered to be pests
What is extinction?
None of a species remain
List three natural disasters.
Floods, bush fire and cyclones
What is a transect and how is it used?
To divide by cutting transversely.
A transect is a narrow strip that crosses the entire area being studied, from one side to the other, or top to bottom. Transects provide an accurate and easy method of representing an area simply.
List 3 positive and 3 negative impacts of fires.
Negative impacts: CO2 in the trees is released,
Wildlife is killed,
Vegetation is lost.
Positive impacts: Ash acts like a fertiliser,
Some animals can hunt easier with the loss of trees as protection,
Burnt out material allows for healthier regrowth
