Body Systems Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
In humans it regulates the body temperature.
What is the difference between internal and external environments?
Those with an internal locus of control tend to attribute results to their own traits, whereas those with an external locus of control tend to attribute events to external, environmental traits.
What are our five senses?
Taste, smell, hear, touch and sight
What are 2 types of neurons? What is the function of each?
Sensory neurons: Tells the rest of the brain about the external and internal environment.
Communication neurons: Transmits signals from one brain area to another.
What is a reflex action? What neurons are used? Explain in words.
A reflex action is an automatic instinctive, unlearned reaction to a stimulus.
Receptor detects a stimulus - change in the environment. Sensory neuron sends signal to relay neuron. Motor neurone sends signal to effector. Effector produces a response
Why do we need a brain?
Your brain is the control centre of your body. It controls everything you do - Makes your heart beat and your muscles move.
What is the endocrine system?
Includes all of the glands of the body and the hormones produced by those glands.
How does the hypothalamus begin puberty?
(It is linked to the pituitary gland), whicn contols the release of many hormones including the one that develops the sex organs.
What is asexual reproduction?
A method of reproduction that requires only one parent. / Reproduction without sex.
Meaning of the following words: Uterus, Ovary, Testicle, Sperm duct, Oviduct and Cervix
Uterus: The womb
Ovary: Female reproductive organ, where ova or eggs are produced.
Testicle: Either two oval organs that produce sperm in men.
Sperm duct: Transports sperm from the epididymis in anticipation of ejaculation.
Oviduct: The tube through which an ovum or egg passes from an ovary.
Cervix: Lower end of the womb/uterus.
What is a pathogen?
Bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease
What is a parasite?
Need another organism to survive

Name an non-infectious disease
