The enviroment Flashcards
1
Q
3 types of environmental damage that industrialisation can cause
(they can’t afford cleaner technology and methods to minimise damage)
A
- water pollution: industrial pollution in cities means clean water can be scarce
- deforestation: rainforests are logged for hardwoods or to make way for agriculture
- desertification: over farming the land can exhaust and ruin the soil - turns to desert
2
Q
How do neo-liberalists suggest we minimise environmental damage?
A
Neo-liberal theory argues that countries need to calculate the costs and benefits of any development strategy and if environmental damage is too high then that strategy shouldn’t be pursued
3
Q
What does the structuralist view suggest about how to manage the environment
A
environmental issues are not always a priority because economic ways to develop are always more important when the developing world is struggling
4
Q
Is sustainable development the solution?
A
- aims to protect the environment from future generations
- environment: renewable energy etc
- economic growth: focuses on development and using too many of earths resources
- social equality: equal rights and access to education for everyone
