Demography Flashcards
population growth in developing world
ageing population = better health care and LEDC’s have better access to this now
majority has an even balance of genders however china still is seriously unbalanced (more men than women) - can be due to more value on male babies and one child policy
modernisation theorists worry about population growth
- too many people to feed, not enough recourses in LEDC’s, this can lead to death rates and higher malnutrition which may hinder development
- increased expenditure on feeding population rather than industry
> solution involves promoting birth control and educating women (as they have less babies): however some cultures in LEDC’s oppose contraception e.g Islam (-) failed method
Marxists argue that population growth is not the issue
the cause of starvation and famine is not over population but the unequal distribution of the world’s resources - there is enough good for everyone but most resources go to where the most money and profit is (capitalism), not where it is needed the most
(+) dependency theorists agree that the west take all the best resources and that redistribution is a better solution than population control
