The Endocrine System Flashcards
What are the functions of the endocrine system?
sodium and water balance- blood volumes
calcium and phosphate balance- preserves extracellular fluid concentration for cell survival
energy balance and control of macronutrient utilisation and storage
responses to stress
reproduction, sexual development and growth
What are chemical messengers?
glands or organs that secrete hormones
What are glands?
they are ductless- they don’t have channels
secrete hormones into the bloodstream
Structure of the endocrine system
Plentiful supply of blood around the endocrine gland
What do the hormones do?
carried around the body to excite or inhibit activity of other organs or tissues
Whta is a non-steroidal hormone?
attach to specific membrane receptors and work by a second messenger mechanism
What is the steroidal hormone?
small and lipid soluble
can pass through the cell membrane of the target organ
Role of thyroid hormones
Stimulating metabolism
Facilitates the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, fats for energy, stimulating heat and glucose production
Production of structural proteins, enzymes and other hormones
Promote growth and development in children
