The Endocrine System Flashcards
What is it?
Provides the body with a chemical system of communication via the blood stream
Works in tandem with the nervous system
Regulates a variety of bodily functions and behaviours
Glands
Endocrine system consist of a network of glands
Structure that releases a variety of hormones
Different glands release different hormones
Pituitary Gland
Master gland that releases hormones that control the actions of all other glands
Hormones
Chemical released by glands
Travel via bloodstream to other glands to exert their effects
Each hormones has different function to certain organs such as regulating growth
Pituitary Gland- Releases ACTH. Controls release of hormones from other glands
Adrenal Gland- Releases adrenaline causes physiological changes
Fight of Flight Response
Hypothalamus -> Sympatho-medullary pathway is activated -> Sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system -> Adrenal Medulla -> Adrenaline and Noradrenaline secreted -> Detected by receptors in target cells of the body leading to changes such as increased heartbeat
Role of Adrenaline
Sweating- Cools down the body
Bladder- Emptying of the bladder is inhibited
Pupils- Dilate to increase awareness of external stimuli:
