Biological Approach Flashcards
What is it?
Assumes behaviour is caused by physical factors
Genetics
CNS
Biochemistry
Influence of Genes
Each individuals have 46 chromosomes containing thousands of genes
Code for the structure and functioning of the nervous system which influences behaviour
Except for twins everyone’s genetic makeup is unique
Genotype
Phenotype
Genotype-an individuals genetic make up
Phenotype- a combined effect of an individuals genotype and the environment
Concordance rate
rate which the same trait is present in both pair of twins
Twin studies
Used to determine the involvement of genetic factors by comparing concordance rate of monozygotic and dizygotic twins
Examples of Twin studies
Gottesman - Compared concordance rate of schizophrenia between pairs of twins
Maudsley Bipolar Twin study- investigates different aspects of thinking between pairs of twins with and without bipolar disorder
Evolution and Behaviour
Psychological characteristics such as aggression was part of the evolutionary processes
Naturally selected
Most beneficial mutation are passed down to descendants
Sexually selection
Possess characteristics that attract opposite sex
Evaluation
+ Lots of research studies
+ Lead to some very effective therapies
- Reductionist
- Deterministic
