The Endocrine System Flashcards
How does the endocrine system work
Consist of glands. these glands secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. The blood caries the hormones around the body. Each hormone on,y acts on specific target organ where it produces an effect
Compare endocrine system with nervous system
Nervous system - electrical impulses, travel down Neurons, fast, short lasting
Endocrine system - chemicals (hormones), travel in blood stream, slower effect, long lasting
What hormones does pancreas release
Those involved in concentration of glucose in the blood
Which hormones do ovaries and testes release
Involved in puberty and reproduction
What hormones do the thyroid gland release
Involved in growth and regulating basic metabolic rate
What Hormone do adrenal glands release
Those to do with fear and stress
What hormone does the pituitary gland release
Range of effects. Releases a number of different hormones in the blood depending on the conditions. The pituitary gland act other glands which they cause other hormones to be released
What is the pituitary gland also known as
Master gland
What can happen if you have an over reactive thyroid gland
Too much thyroxine in blood which raises basic metabolic rate increased formation of lipids and protein
