Maintaing Water Balance Flashcards
What happens if the blood is too concentrated
More ADH released
Which gland releases ADH
Pituitary gland
What effect does ADH have
Causes the kidney tubules to become more permeable to water so more water is reabsorbed from tubules into the blood.
What is the effect of more water being reabsorbed
Less urine
Amount of water in blood returns to normal
What is water control an example of
Negative feedback cycle
What happens if blood is too dilute
Pituitary gland releases less ADH
What effect does less ADH have
Less water is reabsorbed into the blood
More unrine
What does it mean if someone has kidney failure
Their blood will have a higher concentration of water ions and urea then it should
How does kidney dialysis Work
Blood is passes over a semi-permeable membrane.
On one side we have blood on other dialysis fluid
What can pass through in kidney dialysis
Water ions and urea but large molecules like protein and blood cells can’t pass through
What does dialysis fluid contain
Normal concentration of water and ions but no urea
What happens to urea is dialysis
Because there is a concentration gradient urea diffuses from the blood into the dialysis fluid
Why is the dialysis fluid constantly refreshed
To always ensure there is a large concentration gradient for urea
Problems with kidney dialysis
Patient have to visit hospital often
Controlled diet
What happens in a kidney transplant
The disease kidney is replaced with a healthy kidney from a donor
