Modern Farming Flashcards
Why is not all biomass transferred
Not all material eaten is digested and absorbed it passes out as feaces
Not all energy from respiration is used for growth, it is Süd- for movement and constant body temp
Problem with free range chickens
Lots of energy lots in movements
Energy used to keep body temperature constant
Less biomass to grow and produce eggs
How does intensive farming prevent biomass loss
Temperature controlled shed
The space is limited which restricts chickens movement
Less biomass is wasted compared to free range chickens
But a high protein diet which produces more eggs
Grow faster and produce more eggs
Advantages factory farming
More efficient less biomass is wasted in respiration
Control food that they eat so all the nutrients they have less food fasted
Eggs or milk can be more easily harvested
Disadvantages factory farming
Infectious diseases can spread more quickly
To prevent disease that overfed with antibiotics- this increases the risk of antibiotic resistant bacteria
More stressed so aggressive
Ethical objections to factory farming
Raised in normal conditions and have normal behaviour
Increases animal welfare by reducing stress
