the endocrine system Flashcards
what is a hormone?
a chemical substance
produced by a gland and carried by the blood
which alters the activity of one or more specific target organs
Function of Insulin:
-converts glucose into glycogen for storage
Effects of adrenaline:
- increased blood glucose concentration
- increased pulse rate/breathing rate
- dilated pupils
- blood flow diverted to muscles
Endocrine system:
- slower transmission
- lasts longer
- chemical hormones produced
- made up of glands
When we are hot…
- sweat is secreted by sweat glands
- hairs lie flat against the skin
when we are cold…
- skeletal muscles contract rapidly and we shiver
- erect hairs trap a layer of air around the skin
Vasodilation is…
increased blood flow in capillaries because blood vessels to skin capillaries get wider
Vasoconstriction is…
decreased blood flow in capillaries because aterioles leading to the skin capillaries get narrower
What is homeostasis?
the maintenance of a constant internal environment
insulin is produced when…
blood glucose concentration rises
glucagon is produced when…
blood glucose concentration falls
symptoms of type 1 diabetes?
- weakness
- blurred vision
- extreme thirst
what is a Clinostat?
- a disc attatched to a motor (helps with doing a gravitropism experiment)
