Respiratory system Flashcards
What is the cartilage surrounding the trachea?
-supports the airways and keep them open during breathing
What is the function of goblet cells?
-production of mucus
What does mucus do?
-traps particles like pathogens and dust and prevents them from getting into the lungs
Function of Cilia?
-Beats and pushes the mucus away from the lungs towards the throat
During Inhalation…
- Diaphragm contracts
- volume of chest cavity increases
- External intercostal muscles contract
- pressure decreases
in inspired air:
21 percent oxygen
0.04 carbon dioxide
78 percent nitrogen
in expired air:
16 percent oxygen
4 percent carbon dioxide
78 percent nitrogen
How to test for Carbon dioxide?
Limewater, it becomes cloudy in presence of carbon dioxide
What happens to your heart rate during exercise?
- Increase in breathing
- more oxygen is needed to release energy
- anaerobic respiration occurs
- lactic acid is produced
- excess oxygen breaks down the lactic acid in the liver after exercise
- repaying the oxygen debt formed
Why is lactic acid bad?
- denatures enzymes
- lowers pH of cells
Why do humans need energy?
- growth
- contract muscles
- cell division
respiration is controlled by…
enzymes
What is aerobic respiration?
- chemical reactions in cells
- using oxygen
- to release energy
what are NOT the products of anaerobic respiration IN ANIMALS?
-Carbon dioxide, lactic acid is the only product
Uses of Yeast:
- bread making
- brewing
