What is a pathogen?
A disease causing organism
What is direct contact?
the pathogen is passed directly from one host to another by transfer of body fluids such as blood or semen
What is indirect contact?
the pathogen leaves the host and is carried in some way to another, uninfected individual
Methods of transmission:
food or water, droplets in the air, touching contaminated surfaces, insect bites
Mechanical barriers:
Skin, hairs in the nose
Chemical barriers:
Mucus, stomach acid
What is the function of a phagocyte?
