The Elbow and Radio-Ulnar Joints Flashcards
what type of joint is the elbow joint?
synovial hinge
label features of the elbow joint
which ligament holds the ulnar in place?
ulnar collateral ligament
which ligament holds the head of the radius?
annular ligamnet
which muscles cause flexion of the elbow joint?
- biceps brachii
- bradchioradialis
- brachialis
which muscles cause extension of the elbow joint?
- triceps brachii
- anconeus
what causes Students elbow (olecranon bursitis)?
- the subcutaneous olecranon bursa can be damaged through repeated excessive pressure and friction.
- this inflammation (commonly occuring when you’re leaning on them studying) is called olecranon bursitis.
what causes tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)?
- repetitive overuse of the muscles in the forearm causes inflammation of the muscle tendons attached to the lateral epicondyle of the elbow > lateral epicondylitis
what causes golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis)?
- repetitive overuse of forearm muscle causes inflammation of the muscle tendons attached to the medial epicondyle of the elbow > medial epicondylitis.
what type of joints are the proximal and distal radio-ulnar joints?
synovial pivot > allows both supination and pronation of the forearm
The proximal radio-ulnar joint is supported by another ligament arising at the elbow – this keeps the head of the radius in place.
What is the name of this ligament?
annular ligament
what are the muscles involved with supination at the radio-ulnar joint?
- biceps brachii
- supinator muscle
what are the muscles involved with pronation at the elbow joint?
- pronator teres
- pronator quadratus
