The Effect of Language Devices Flashcards
What is the effect of an adjective?
An adjective allows us to gain more information about a certain object or a person, which could be important to note later on in the text.
What is the effect of a metaphor?
The use of a metaphor shows how one event which is happening in a text can be applied to an event which is not happening, perhaps it will convey more clear emotions in the reader
What is the effect of a simile?
To compare something to something else in order to get a better perspective of what is happening in a text. Such as if someone was shouting very loudly and it sounded like a lions roar then the reader can understand that the person is being very loud and may give them a better picture of this.
What is the effect of personification?
The effect that personification is that it adds life and possibly relatability to something which has previously not had a life at all.
What is the effect of hyperbole?
Hyperbole could show the urgency of a situation to the reader if a character has to exaggerate how many times they have said something to someone else it could emphasise the importance that they remember it.
What is the effect of alliteration?
Alliteration could be used to put two words together which might not work together but because of how they have been it could invoke a specific feeling in the reader which is more evocative than not using alliteration.
What is the effect of Imagery?
Imagery can improve the readers immersion of a text so that they are able to understand what might go on to a better standard.
What is the effect of emotive language?
Emotive language is used to invoke a certain specific feeling in the reader which may also stress the intensity of an event in the text. Such as if something is “Melancholy”, then it is like an instant punch of sadness to the reader and they may be able to sympathise with the characters better if this example is the case.
What is the effect of pronouns?
Pronouns in some examples could present to the reader how someone feels about someone else. For example, if a character does not care that much about another character or is angry with them, they may refer to them as “them” other than “him”. The effect that this could have on a reader is they could feel as if the character is deliberately dehumanising them to emulate their feeling of anger.
What is the effect of Facts?
The effect of facts is they are often used to emphasise the points which a writer is trying to make so the reader can get a better idea of how something is.
What is the effect of rhetorical questions?
The effect of rhetorical questions is to make the reader actually answer this question in their head when the answer is blatantly obvious due to the specific wording of the question.
What is the effect of superlatives?
The effect of a superlative is it stresses to the reader how much the writer wants to make a character seem passionate about something by adding “est” or “most” to the end of it. It makes the reader realise that what the character is saying is the furthest that something can go and is the best of the best.
What is the effect of onomatopoeia?
Onomatopoeia could invoke more evocative feelings in the reader as because of how the word sounds when the reader says it in their head is similar to what is happening in the text, they are able to understand in an easier way what is currently happening. Such as if someone is punched and it says, “Pow”
What is the effect of sibilance?
Sibilance is used to create a hissing sound in a text is it helps to create an atmosphere or feeling in that specific sentence, which depending on the sentence could have evil connotations to the reader.
