Q

What is radical catastrophism? (DRIA model)

A
  • The idea, that the world is a horrible place to live. For instance in sacrifice, the members describes how the world has a “sick soul” and how people are hollow. Also what happens when right-wing terrorists thinks that muslim immigrants have ruined their society or what left-wing terrorists thinks capitalistic society is.
  • What is important is, that this is someone’s fault. That the world is horrible is due to the muslims, communists or the bourgeoise.

Q

What does D-R-I-A stand for?

A
  • D = Disintegration of social identity
o In this step, people start questioning their present values due to trauma or personal failure. Maybe they feel marginalised, experience something hard or something else. Therefor they get cognitive opening and they might start searching for an exit strategy.
  • R = Reconstruction of social identity through a radical ideology
o People who have experienced the first step might find an ideology, which offers them some existential point of reference, so they can reconstruct their social identity.
o In this phase they acquire a radical mental universe, which contain the seven characteristics.
  • I = Integration in a revolutionary sect
o People who have gained the radical mental universe starte looking for like-minded. Sometimes they find real people, sometimes they get an “imagined comminuty” and start seeing themselves as for instance members of ISIS.
o THIS is were the shift from cognitive to violent radicalisation happens.
  • A = Allienation from the surrounding world
o This step is crucial since it helps the radicalized person to accept the idea of killing. It does this in two ways: 1) Manifestly: It forbids a relationship with the “morally corrupt” others, and thereby helps them to feel morally superior. 2) Latently, it hinders the surrounding world in from excercising “moral authority” on them, and thereby create doubts about the ideology.
o By being allineated from the surrounding world, the person does not receive “NEGATIVE FEEDBACK”, which can make you question your ideology. A negative feedback is a person who does not agree with your view, and tell you that you are wrong.

Q

What does respectively the DR and the IA describe?

A
  • DR: Describes the individuals personality, and how it develops a radicalized mindset.
  • IA: Describes the relationship with the violent radicalication, whith the terror organization.
17
Q

What is the difference between living OF politics (terrorism) and living FOR politics (terrorism) and who is the father of this distinction?

A
  • Max Weber <3
18
Q

What is the main argument of Mc. Bride, whom Orisini build the DRIA model on?

A
  • Terrorism is driven by an existential feedback loop
  • The excistential feedback loop describes how people who feel existential anxiety turn violent to lessen this anxiety. But instead it increases it. So they perform more violence.
  • The loop is: Your have existential aciety –> Seeks ideology –> The ideology will make the existential anciety worse. –> reinforcement of ideology
  • Existential violence comes from having to deal with mortality.
19
Q

What is an imagined community, as described by Benedict Andersson?

A
  • An imagined community is when a radicalized person sees themselves as part of a community, which they have never met in real life. For instance when untrained lone wolfs claims they are part of ISIS.
  • Comes from “the power of imagination”.
20
Q

What is the difference between cognitive and violent radicalization and when does the change happen in the DRIA model?

A
  • You can have a radicalized mind, without doing violent actions. In the DRIA-model, this shift happens in the I, when you get integrated in a revolutionary sect.
21
Q

What is the main difference between Marc Sageman and Orsinis theory?

A
  • According to Marc Sageman it is the other way around: You the first step is that you meet people, who are then the reason, that you get radicalised. Oppositly Orsini and the DRIA-model says, that you get radicalised, and then you start looking for like-minded people.
22
Q

What is a binary code mentality?

A
  • What happens if your cognitive opening leads you to get radicalized.
  • Binary code mentality: Like a computer which only knows 1 and 0. You see only black or white, only good or evil (I think).
23
Q

Do you necessarily get radicalised when you have a cognitive opening?

A
  • Nooo. You can also deal with it in many other ways.
