The Digestive System Pharmacology Flashcards
anorexiant
Treats obesity by suppressing appetite
Examples: phendimetrazine, Adipost, Obezine; phentermine, Zantryl, Adipex
antacid
Used to neutralize stomach acids
Examples: calcium carbonate, Tums; aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, Maalox, Mylanta
antidiarrheal
Used to control diarrhea
Examples: loperamide, Imodium; diphenoxylate and atropine, Lomotil; kaolin/pectin, Kaopectate
antiemetic
Treats nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness
Examples: prochlorperazine, Compazine; promethazine, Phenergan
antivirals
Treats herpes simplex infection
Examples: valacyclovir, Valtrex; famcyclovir, Famvir; acyclovir, Zovirax
H[2]-receptor antagonist
Used to treat peptic ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease. When stimulated, H[2]-receptors increase the production of stomach acid. Using an antagonist to block these receptors results in a low acid level in the
stomach
Examples: ranitidine, Zantac; cimetidine, Tagamet; famotidine, Pepcid
laxative
Treats constipation by stimulating a bowel movement
Examples: senosides, Senokot; psyllium, Metamucil
proton pump inhibitors
Used to treat peptic ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Blocks the stomach’s ability to secrete acid
Examples: esomeprazole, Nexium; omeprazole, Prilosec
