The Digestive System Flashcards
what are the two main groups that the digestive system can be divided into?
- Alimentary canal (the tube system for transportation)
- The accessory organs (the machinery for digestion – secretion)
What are the organs involved in digestion? Where are they spatially? relative to the esophagus, the stomach, and the intestine
- First, Salvary gland
- The liver (sit on the right hand side of the stomach)
- The gallbladder is a small organ that sits on the liver. This is where bile is stored. Bile is produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder.
- The pancreas is behind the stomach. (secrete digestive enzyme)
how does the liver assist with fat digestion?
It produced bile. Bile emulsifies fat. Bile is amphipathic – break down fat into smaller trunks for digestion
Where is the pancreas and what does it do?
It releases hormones (endocrine – Insulin, glucagon)
It also is responsible for the secretion of digestive enzyme which plays a big part in indigestion.
What are the enzymes being released by the pancreas? common sense … what do you need to digest?
Protein - Protease
Fat - Lipase
DNA/ RNA - nuclease
Starch - Amylase
The stuff coming out of the stomach is very acidic and the digestive enzyme works on the neutral condition, how does the intestine obtain a neutral pH?
Releases of Bicarbonate from the pancreas.
What are the layers made up the alimentary canal? structure informs functions – how are these layers different in the intestine and the stomach?
Check notebook
where is the cardiac sphincter? what does it do?
- The sphincter prevents acid reflux from the stomach. Heartburn
