Q

Describe the shape and the structure of the pituitary gland?

A

It looks like balls. There are anterior and posterior glands, the anterior gland release 6 major hormones while the posterior gland sends out neural signals.

Q

what is another name of the anterior and posterior glands of the pituitary?

A
  • the anterior gland is made up of gland tissue, wherease the posterior gland is made of up neural tissue.
  • Another name for pituitary is hypophysis.
  • Anterior - gland - adenohypophysis.
  • Posterior - neural - Neurohypophysis.

Q

How are hormones released from the posterior gland of the pituitary gland? what produces the hormones in the first place?

A
  • The hormones are peptide hormones and are produced by the neurons themselves. The peptides are then transported through the axon to the terminal axon. With the presence of the action potential, they are released. This is very similar to the release of neurotransmitters, the only difference is in this case, the peptides are released into the capillaries bed which will then transported to the bloodstream.

Q

How are hormones produced and released in the anterior pituitary gland?

A

the anterior pituitary gland is made up of gland issue consisting of cells that can make hormones. These cells are surrounded by capillary beds, which allows for the released hormone from the gland to be transported into the bloodstream.

How is this controlled by the hypothalamus?
- The hypothalamus consists hormone-making cells. The two capillary beds are in series and connected by the portal vein. .

  • This portal vein allows the coordinated local release of specific hormones from the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary gland.
