The Diaphragm Flashcards
Function of Diaphgragm
Main muscle of resp, raises intra-abdo pressure coughing, vom, and defecation
Attachments of Diaphragm
- peripheral:
- lumbar verteb
- costal cartilage ribs7-12
- xiphoid process
- central tendon to pericardium
- medial, lateral arcuate ligament
What is the diaphgragm
sheet of skeletal musc stretching across midline of body separating thorax and. abdo.
Diaphragmatic hiatuses at vertebral levels and their bodies
inferior vena cava - T8: IVC, Right phrenic nerve
oesophagus - T10: Oes, Vagus nerve
aorta - T12: aorta, azygous, hemiazygous,thoracic duct
Diapghragm innervation
paired phrenic nerves (C3-5) both motor and sensory. Lower intrcostal nerves provide sensory to periphery.
Which dome is higher upon expiration
Right bc liver
What are crura and their attachments?
Crurae are tendon parts of diaphgragm arising from the verteb. Right crura is larger attaching to L3-4 whereas L attach to L2-3.
Sternocostal trriangle
hiatus transmiting lymph from liver and superior epigastric vessels
Relationship of hiatuses and bodies they transmit
Caval hiatus affects IVC dilatation upon diagraphm contraction on inspiration. Oesoph. hiatus also constricts oesophagus at right crura w/ formation of muscle sphincter. Aorta doesn’t pierce.
