What was the Middle Ages?
A time period roughly between 500 AD and 1500AD. The fall of the Roman Empire and the age of faith in God and heaven.
What were the results of the crusades?
They came into contact with the advanced of the Muslims,they learnt about science, astronomy, geography,navigation and medicine, the knowledge they gained encouraged them to go on voyages,it met luxury items like silk,ivory and spices, explorers went on voyages as far as Asia.
When did voyages of discovery start?
Fifteenth century.

Trade

Before the 1400s what would Europeans do?
They would only travel to nearby towns.
After the 1400s what did the Europeans do?
They explored new lands,more people learned to read and write, the Christian religion spread, knowledge was spread, trade became important and people became curios about other places and culture.
What happened after the Constantinople people were conquered by the Turks?
It became dangerous to travel to the east to get certain goods.
What were these ideas made difficult by?
Superstitions.
What superstitions did early sailors have?
Landed in central Africa you turn black, equatorial regions were a boiling pot boiling men who go near it, cruel sea monsters roamed the seas, the earth was flat and you would fall of the edge where it ended in a big waterfall and there was a magnet that pulled out all nails holding the ships together out.
When did sailors overcome their fears?
In the beginning of the 12th century.
What helped sailors over come their fears?
Inventions like the compass,astrolabe and rudder helped with navigating , gunpowder gave them courage and because of the attraction of spices in the east.
What was the Renaissance ?
It was the revival of European art and literature during the 14th and 16th centuries.
