Scales Flashcards
What are distances on maps?
Distances on maps are an exact number of times smaller than the real distances on the land.
What are all maps?
All maps are different sizes.
What do maps have?
Maps have different scales.
Give an example of different (scales) distances on maps?
A map might be ten times smaller than the real distance. Another map might be 1000 times smaller than the real distance.
What does a map scale do?
A map scale tells us the length over real distances on the ground.
What does the line at the bottom of the map show?
It shows you the map scale.
What do people draw?
People draw maps to different scales.
What do small scale maps do?
Small scale maps. Show large ares on the ground in less detail.
What do large scale maps do?
Large scale maps show small areas on the ground in more detail?
One centimeter on the map represents 250 kilometers on ground. What does this mean?
This means if you measure one centimeter on the map it will represent 250 kilometers on the ground.
What do line scales do?
Line scales show the map scale as a line under the map.
Where is the ground distance written?
The ground distance is written on the line as a number eg. 100 kilometers.
What can we also use to describe a scale?
Words.
Give an example of a word scale?
One centimeter on the the map represents 100 kilometers on ground.
What is a scale about?
Scales are about size.
