Latitude And Longitude Flashcards
What does imaginary mean?
Does not really exist.
What is a line of latitude?
Lines on a globe or map that run from east to west.
What is a longitude line?
Lines on a globe that run from north to south.
What are longitude and latitude lines?
Lines of latitude and longitude are imaginary lines that people draw on maps and globes. They are not real lines on the land.
What does the equator do?
The equator divides the world into two equal halves.
What are the two halves called that equator divides the earth into?
They are called hemispheres.
The hemispheres divide the world in which two hemispheres?
Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
What is the Greenwich meridian?
The Greenwich meridian is a line of longitude.
The Greenwich Meridian passes through what?
It passes through a place called Greenwich in England.
What does the Greenwich Meridian do?
It divides the earth into the eastern and western hemispheres.
What is every place on the globe in?
The northern or Southern Hemisphere and the the eastern and Western Hemisphere.
What do latitude and longitude lines divided a globe into?
They divide the globe into a grid pattern.
What does each line have?
Each line has a number in degrees.
What is the 0 degree line latitude?
The equator.
What Is the 0 degree line of longitude?
The Greenwich Meridian.
How many degrees of longitude are there east and west of the Greenwich Meridian?
There are 180 degrees of longitude east and west of the Greenwich Meridian.
How many degrees of latitude are north and south of the poles?
There are 90 degrees of latitude north and south of the poles.
How many longitude degrees of longitude are there?
There are 360 degrees of longitude.
How many lines of latitude are there?
There are 180 degrees of latitude.
Why do we use a degree? (and example)
We use a degree to describe the position of a place. For example we can say Cairo is 30 degrees north and is 31 degrees east. 30 north 31 east
What do we always do when writing out co ordinates? (and example)
We always give the degrees latitude first and then the degrees longitude. Eg. we write 40 degrees Ń (latitude), 150 E (longitude). We call these co-ordinates.
What is a hemisphere?
One half of the earth.
