As Stalin had threatenedBerlin with a Berlin blockade the western powers decided to create their own military alliance protect themselves from the Soviet union

They promise to help each other if any one countries attacked (Britain France the USA and nine other countries )

This also meant from 1949 onwards American troops would be stationed in Europe to help out at short notice

This clearly angered Soviet union who saw the USA as a threat

After the creation of NATO the soviet union responded by forming their own military alliance called the Warsaw Pact

The countries in the Warsaw Pact were all other satellite countries in Eastern Europe Control by communism

The Warsaw Pact was completely led by the soviet union

These countries were now as the Eastern Bloc countries

Again they promised support each other if one state was attacked by the western powers
