- Businesses look for ways to sell their products to different consumers who may be potential customers
- Involves breaking down the market into smaller groups that have similar characteristics
Target market
- Those people who have a particular need or want
- Consumer most likely to purchase your product

Consumer profiling
Information about the target market:
Age, Gender, Income level, Family life cycle, culture/ethnicity, geographic, attitudes, lifestyle behaviour.
Demographics
Age, Gender, Family life cycle, Income level, Ethnicity & culture.
Psychographics
Method used to measure a consumers psychological attributes. (Much more difficult to measure than demographics)
Personality traits, Values, Opinions, Attitudes, Interests, Lifestyle, Religious beliefs.
Geographics
Where the consumer lives:
Urban, Suburban, Rural
